We spoke to our ‘Founding Father’ Bruce, Managing Director of Pure Beginnings and father to two sons, Oliver (11) and Nathan (9):
Tell us about your journey to parenthood:
Kate and I were married relatively young and decided that we wanted to enjoy our time as a married couple before taking that step into parenthood. After seven years of marriage we decided that the time was right to start a family. Shortly after, Oliver was born, and then Nathan came along two years later. Being a parent is one of the most difficult and rewarding journeys a couple will experience, and we are grateful for the time we had as a married couple before we embarked on this adventure.
What was your most memorable moment connecting with your boys as babies?
Coming home after a day at work and holding them as they fell asleep in my arms – the worries of the day become so insignificant in those times.
The most joy-filled part of being a dad?
Watching them grow up and develop into their own characters. I am always amazed at how, despite being treated in the same way, they have become two completely different human beings.
The hardest part of being a dad?
Leading by example. Kids learn by watching their parents, not by being told what to do, and doing the correct thing all the time is a challenge. Much easier said than done!
How has becoming a father changed you?
Your priorities change when you become a parent and you learn not to sweat the small stuff so much.
Your wishes/hopes for your boys?
To be happy, healthy, respectful to people and the planet, and be grateful for what they have.
What advice would you give to other dads out there?
Don’t live your lives through your children, let them choose their own path.
A thought that has helped you over the years?
I hope I can be as good a father to my sons as my dad was to me.
