We are thrilled to welcome Sue to the Pure Beginnings family.
Sue is huge-hearted, warm, and she overflows with joy. She also holds the most vulnerable space in the process of baby adoption – between birth and them finding their forever homes. Not only does she care for these vulnerable babies, but she empowers mothers in her volunteer work at Mowbray Maternity Hospital – an inspiration to us, and to many others.
Read our interview with her below.
Welcome Sue!
Hi, I’m Sue Gray, a doula volunteering at Mowbray Maternity Hospital, and a Kanga Mom (a temporary safe care parent), for babies between birth and adoption.
Tell us more about yourself:
I am an adventurer by nature, having lived all over the world. I surf every Tuesday with a bunch of moms, which is both therapeutic and fun. Reformer Pilates is another passion of mine.
What made you decide to become a doula and temporary safe care parent?
I was on an outreach in the Hidden Himalayas in Nepal and heard that the maternal and infant death rate was very high due to a lack of resources and access to healthcare facilities. Some villagers had to hike six hours to the nearest clinic or hospital. I knew I had to be part of the solution. Studying to become a doula was always about serving those mothers who did not have the resources to pay for support. Labour, birth, and postpartum are difficult to navigate on your own. I wanted to offer my expertise to those mothers who were most in need.
One thing you wish everyone knew about being a Temporary Safe Care Parent:
It is hard. It is costly. You become too attached. But it is worth it.
What makes you burst with joy?
Seeing people thrive, and mothers empowered to take care of their babies.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you:
I’d happily trade in cooking for cleaning.
If you weren’t a doula and kanga mom, what can you imagine yourself doing?
I’d love to be on Broadway. Dancing and singing.
Name three things you cannot live without:
My faith community, adventure – whether it is surfing or hiking or having the opportunity to explore new places and cultures, and babies.
Fave Pure Beginnings product and why?
Soothing Baby Wash and Shampoo. I use this on all the babies in my care. It is soft on the skin and smells amazing.
