Pure Beginnings, South Africa’s first certified organic baby brand, has launched a spray format of it’s very popular 100% Natural Insect Repellent Stick. The DEET free insect repellent stick has become a very popular product with moms, not only because it is completely safe to use on babies and children, but also because it repels insects so effectively.

The spray format of the insect repellent uses the same extremely efficient active ingredients as the stick, and was introduced for convenience and ease of use. “We are certain the spray is going to be a very welcome addition to the range”, says Bruce Moore-Gordon, owner of Pure Beginnings. “As a business we are committed to offering safe, effective and convenient products for the whole family, whilst still maintaining our high standards of ensuring all our products are of an organic and natural origin”, he continues. Launched in South Africa in October, the insect repellent spray will reach the market in time for the start of the peak summer mosquito season.

Both the Insect Repellent Spray and Stick are 100% Natural, which means that every ingredient is naturally derived. There are no added chemicals and this makes the product perfectly suited to those with sensitive skin, including children and babies. The Pure Beginnings 100% Natural Insect Repellent Spray is infused with a number of highly effective insect repelling essential oils. These include Neem, Citronella, Lemon Eucalyptus and Lemon Bush.

  • Neem (Azadirachta Indica Seed Oil) is a key ingredient in providing a natural alternative to synthetic pesticides in agriculture. It is also effectively used in creams and balms to deter insects.
  • Citronella oil (Cymbopogon Nardus Oil) is a plant-based insect repellent. In use since 1948, the United States Environmental Protection Agency considers oil of citronella as a biopesticide with a non-toxic mode of action.
  • Lemon Eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus Citriodora Oil) is used in insect repellents to provide hours of relief from biting insects.
  • Lippia oil (Lippia Javanica) is probably Africa’s most under-rated fragrant medicinal plant. It is widely credited as being an antiseptic and is believed to be useful as a gargle for sore throats and abscesses. The essential oil is high in ipsdienone, which is shown to repel insect pests.

This combination of natural insect deterrents ensures biting insects are repelled, while your health & wellbeing are cared for too.

DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), is the most commonly used chemical ingredient in most insect repellents. It can cause eye irritation and allergic skin reactions, particularly at concentrations of 50 percent and above. In 2013 an analysis of about 4,000 DEET-related calls to poison control centres found that 450 people needed medical treatment after applying DEET. Most cases of seizures, slurred speech, coma and other serious side effects have occurred in people who ingested DEET or applied it for three or more days in a row, or used products with 95 percent DEET or more. It’s unclear whether lower doses pose the same risks, but still, experts urge children, seniors and those with weakened immunity to use DEET with extra caution. This is more than enough reason for us to use safer, natural alternatives which are equally as effective.
